Originally this meant things like Google, Yahoo, and Ask toolbars, but eventually add-ons became one of the most popular features of Firefox. It’s worth noting that the first feature Mozilla highlighted during its inaugural release was Firefox’s ability to “help users avoid annoying pop-ups.” Intrusive ads and pop-ups were frustrating users nearly two decades ago, so much so that Firefox used native pop-up blocking as one of its key selling points.Īdd-ons and extensions also launched in Firefox 1.0 back in 2004. (Remember CDs?) Either way, Firefox was an immediate success: it was downloaded a whopping 100 million times in the first year. While the early 2000s may not sound like that long ago, it was a different era: back then, users could select the option to get the new browser on a CD from the Mozilla store. The first version of the Firefox web browser launched on November 9, 2004.
